SBY: No Place for Theocratic State Movement in Indonesia - KOMPAS.com: "JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has stated there is no place for a movement to set up a religion-based nation in Indonesia.

Indonesia does not recognize other state ideology but Pancasila, President Yudhoyono said when delivering a speech to commemorate the birth of Indonesia’s state ideology of Pancasila at the parliament building here Wednesday.

Therefore, any intention or movement to establish a state based on religion in Indonesia is very much against the objective of the nation life as stated by the founding fathers of Indonesia, he added.

'As the head of state and the head of the government, I say such an intention and a political movement is against our objective and spirit to establish a country based on Pancasila,' he said."

Since the beginning the nation’s founding fathers had been very wise and had a far-reaching vision by developing basic consensus that Indonesia is a nation believing in God and a national country, and not a religious-based state. The head of state also quoted a result of survey saying that 75 percent of the Indonesian people did not want a movement to set up a country based on religion in Indonesia.

The people believed that such a movement is unacceptable and should not be tolerated because it is against the Pancasila state ideology. Vice President Boediono, several ministers and former presidents were present in the event to commemorate the Pancasila birth.

First president Soekarno delivered a speech on June 1, 1945 introducing Pancasila as Indonesia’s state ideology. Pancasila comprises five principles , namely belief in God Almighty, humanity that is just and civilized, the unity of Indonesia, democracy guided by the wisdom of representative deliberation, and social justice for all Indonesians.

Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Taufik Kiemas was the first to deliver a speech, followed by third president BJ Habibie, and fifth president Megawati Soekarnoputri. President Yudhoyono, Indonesia’s sixth president, had the last turn to deliver a speech.
