RI witnessing a national amnesia of Pancasila, says Habibie | The Jakarta Post: "Indonesia's third president B.J Habibie says Indonesia has been undergoing a national amnesia in relation to the state ideology, Pancasila, since the reform era began in 1998.
Pancasila, the five ideological principles of the state, had been forgotten about and was widely regarded as an instrument of the repressive New Order regime, he added.
Speaking at a Pancasila Day ceremony at the House of Representatives in Jakarta, Habibie urged the people of Indonesia not to only view Pancasila as part of the New Order regime.
'After the reform era, we have been trapped in a national amnesia. We refuse to remember Pancasila as our basic ideology and instead merely see it as a symbol of a previous regime,' he said.
Habibie, who was the first speaker at the ceremony, reminded the audience that Pancasila was more than a tool of a regime.
'As long as Indonesia exists, so does Pancasila. It is not part of a regime and it will not disappear when a regime ends,' he said.
